In a move that shakes up the cybersecurity business landscape, Google has announced its largest acquisition to date: a $32 billion all-cash agreement to acquire Wiz, a rapidly growing cloud security startup. This deal underscores Google’s increasing investment in security solutions as it looks to bolster its Google Cloud offerings and better compete in the multi-cloud security space.

Announcing the acquisition, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, highlighted the significance of integrating Wiz’s capabilities into Google Cloud:

Dave Gerry, CEO of Bugcrowd, noted that consolidation is inevitable in a cybersecurity market flooded with vendors.
“With upwards of more than 6,000 cyber vendors in the market, customers are looking to consolidate their security spend to vendors they trust,” Gerry said. “While many hoped that 2025 would be the Year of the IPO, this deal may be a bellwether signaling other large-scale M&A activity.”
Eric Schwake, Director of Cybersecurity Strategy at Salt Security, sees both benefits and risks in the deal.
“Google’s acquisition of Wiz presents several advantages, particularly an improved security platform for Google Cloud clients, featuring integrated functionalities and ongoing multi-cloud support that may foster innovation,” Schwake said. “However, drawbacks include diminished competition, concerns regarding vendor lock-in, and heightened data privacy issues.”
Kaushik Devireddy, Senior Product Manager at Deepwatch, raised concerns about whether Wiz will continue to maintain cloud neutrality.
“One of the primary tenets of Wiz is equally securing every cloud. With the acquisition folding into Google Cloud Platform (GCP), customers may become wary of whether cloud-equality will continue to hold up,” Devireddy said.
What this means for the future of cybersecurity
This deal reinforces a major industry trend: big tech consolidating cybersecurity powerhouses. Google has already made substantial security investments with Mandiant and Siemplify, and this latest acquisition cements its position as a dominant force in cloud security.
But the implications stretch beyond Google. AWS, Microsoft, and Oracle are likely to respond by either acquiring cybersecurity firms or strengthening their in-house security platforms. Experts also predict that future M&A [mergers and acquisitions] activity will focus on AI-driven security, cloud-native application protection platforms (CNAPPs), and API security solutions—all areas of increasing concern for enterprise cybersecurity teams.
